I am not your typical first time mom. I would say Michael is more over-protective than I am. My concerns are much different. In the beginning, I wanted to go all organic. But realistically, in Hutchinson, KS, it is virtually impossible. Sure you can order everything on-line, but the cost of freight alone would be insane! So I do what I can with the resources at my disposal.
Maybe it's my history degree or maybe I'm just a nerd, but I love reading and researching. With the summer season here, I wanted to know what sunscreen would be the best for Tate. I had heard that one of the ingredients mimicked hormones and that really disturbed me. I read about a website called Skin Deep. It is a cosmetics database that rates products based on what is in them. Although it was helpful, I still didn't understand what ingredient I was actually supposed to avoid. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com
Then a friend/ distant relative told me about safemama.com. They have a sunscreen cheat sheet that told me what ingredient to avoid, oxybenzone, and explained why. They also have a list of bug sprays, sun soothers, other hazardous ingredients to avoid (i.e., formaldehyde in baby body wash) and more! Here is the link: http://safemama.com/2009/04/13/safemamas-2009-safer-sunscreen-cheat-sheet/
I knew Target carried California Baby and for $17.99, plus tax, we are trying it. I like it so far. It turns his skin white so I can see if I've missed any place! It really is waterproof too, which is also a disadvantage because it was hard to get off in the bathtub.
There are so many potentially toxic and alarming ingredients in children's products! It is hard to keep up. Thank goodness for the Internet and all of the helpful websites that make it easier for me to do my research without having to pick up the phone or get dirty!
