Cloth Diaper Carnival V: Domesticated Daddy's Use Cloth

The topic this month at Dirty Diaper Laundry is husbands and cloth diapering. Since we have been using cloth for 16 months, Michael has dealt with a little of everything. As soon as we got home from the hospital, we tried the g diapers only to have them clog the toilet. So we switched back to the disposables for a few days. Until one afternoon, instead of absorbing the urine, it leaked out of the diaper and went all over my husband. When we took the diaper off, Tate was red everywhere the diaper had touched his skin and the 'sposie was almost completely dry!
After showering, he went to the store for a different brand and got the same results. I think that package is still in the closet with only one diaper missing. Thankfully, I had planned on using cloth part-time, so we had some prefolds and covers. My mom came over and showed us how to pin them on. Over the course of four or five months, Michael became pretty proficient at pinning prefolds.
We received our first two bumGenius' for Christmas last year. Once he discovered the ease, they quickly became his favorite diapers. We used Christmas money and got some more. Then when Cotton Babies came out with the limited edition fleece bumGenius, we topped off our stash.
Which brings us to our current dilemma. Currently, we are in a heated battle over our cloth diaper stash. The topic of discussion is snaps versus aplix. After a year of heavy use, most of the aplix doesn't even stick to the laundry tabs any more. I would like to convert them to snaps. Michael hates snaps and refuses to use them. He says, as I'm changing a Bamboo Bums, "that looks too complicated." He has such an aversion to snaps that he will put a bumGenius under Tate's fleece longies, rather than a fitted. This coming from the man that used to use pins to fasten our son's diapers!
I appreciate that he uses cloth diapers and humors my addiction/ obsession. He helps with the laundry. All he needs to know is cycle 1 or 2 so he can follow the written directions. I know he would prefer the convenience of disposables, at times, but doesn't have a choice with Tate. Although, he did surprise me by telling our nephew, "we use real diapers." He also knows that next time around, his crazy wife want to start with cloth in the hospital. Since our local hospital and my doctor won't do a VBAC, he's in charge of making sure that happens. Which means he will also have to be in charge of the laundry too. We'll see how that goes...
For the most part, he has been great. There is just one more twist to the Daddy side of cloth diapers- poop. My husband has gotten better about changing them, but there is still room for improvement. At least he doesn't call my mom to come change them any more! However, I would really appreciate not finding dirty diapers and 5-6 cloth wipes (double the amount he probably needed!) stacked on the toilet to be dunked and rinsed when I get home. My husband is an avid hunter, so we often tease him that he can process a deer or elk, but can't deal with a poopy diaper. Sometimes, just the sight of it makes him gag. It baffles me to this day!

  1. My hubby doesn't do snaps either. That's funny that your hubby can gut a deer, but gags at poop. Guys are weird. ;)

  2. i heard a rumor that cotton babies will sell/give an aplix replacement kit....i keep meaning to write to them to find out if it's true. i was less than thrilled with my BGs once I converted them to snaps--they just don't stay closed as well--and am contemplating converting them all back to aplix, if CB will supply the replacement kit! Taking the aplix off was easy-peasy and I can imagine that putting it back on will be cake, too. Let me know what you decide to do with the snaps v. aplix dilemma!

PS BTW, I love my blueberries with snaps and I am dying to try the nifty nappies that you mentioned, too!

  3. My bum genius velcro is looking ratty too...here is how I replaced the tabs, http://www.happygreenbabies.com/diapering/bum-genius-velcro-repair/
I have also heard that Bum Genius sends replacement tabs for free.

I'm impressed that your husband did pins and prefolds in the beginning...that's dedication!

On a side note I'd look into VBACs at a local birth center or another hospital...that's crap that they won't perform them at your hospital. Also, home birth is a great way to have a VBAC! Check out some of my childbirth posts: http://www.happygreenbabies.com/category/birth/

  4. Wow - BG replaces the tabs? I'd love that!

There is a birth center close to you that does VBACs, I'll email you. But seriously, if you choose to have a repeat C-Section don't beat yourself up about it. I tried a VBAC and had to have a C section anyways :)
    Loved the post :)
