Project 365: Day 82 my first bumGenius snap conversion

It is a joke in my family about how weak I am. We also joke about how cheap my husband can be sometimes. It made for an interesting combination when it came to chosing between a snap press and pliers from KAM snaps. I figured it would be tough for me to use the pliers and the difference in price between the two options was $50. Michael said he would help me to save the money. I was shocked and planned on keeping him at his word.
Taking the aplix and laundry tabs off the original bumGenius' was fairly easy. The laundry tabs were back stitched at every corner and were sewn like this:
We also purchased limited edition fleece bumGenius' last spring from Cotton Babies. Those are the ones I decided to convert to snaps. It is probably a good thing because the laundry tabs are not coming off! Every one of them is stiched differently, but look similar to this:
It took me forever to get the 2 off the first diaper I converted. It is randomly back stiched too. I praised the craftsmanship, but cursed it at the same time. When I sew mine back on the originals, it will be the same similar to the pattern that came off. I have a hard enough time sewing a straight line, let alone circles in a tiny area!
After removing all parts associated with the aplix, I made 2 patterns- one for the wings and the other for the front panel. I went with 2 rows of 12 snaps .75" apart and 4 snaps for the wings also .75" apart. I read on the tutorial that 4 on the wing would make it harder for toddlers to remove. I think the next one I am going to try 2 snaps centered and see how that works.
I was able to operate the pliers without Michael's help; however, I'm so glad you can see the centers of the sockets! (He did offer and also had to removed a mistake that I couldn't.) I have a hard time lining things up in the pliers since I obviously can't see the cap through the PUL. The hardest part was actually finding the hole I made with the awl. Now I know marking the spot with a marker after I make the hole will make it easier to find said hole. (Yes, the diaper is strategically snapped so you can't see the last 2 in the bottom row, which ended up horribly out of line!)
Much to my husband's dislike, Tate rocks the Zinna and the Blossom bumGenius'. They used to be exclusively reserved for night time use. They have since been retired from that status because we had to start stuffing them so ridiculously that it caused leaks around his legs, yet without the extra stuffing they were leaking too. We have 2 in each color and these are the 4 that are in need of the replacement leg elastic.

  1. Now it's tempting to change all my aplix to snaps! Great job!
