My dad is very talented and doesn't brag on himself enough. Example: since the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center is located here in town and houses the Apollo 13 command module, a lot of local people worked on various things used in the film, Apollo 13. My sister and I saw it with a friend in the theatre and rolled our eyes as she pointed out everything her mom made on the space suits.
When it came out on video, we watched it as a family. It was near the end of the movie and my dad commented that he held the actual plaque that went into space, so he could make the replica Tom Hanks holds in the movie. Wait... WHAT?! He didn't even tell us until it came out on video and was so nonchalant about it! It was like, "Oh yeah, I made that plaque." He also made various pieces that weren't as easy to recognize, but still, you should have some bragging rights there because not everyone makes things for a Hollywood movie.
He is the owner and third generation in our family's custom sheet metal fabrication/ heating and air conditioning business. He says he can make anything as long as he has a pattern, but I have seen him make/ design his own patterns for others to use. His dad used to say they could make a baby in the shop, if they had a pattern! It's now one of my dad's favorite sayings too.
He and my brother made this piece for a grain elevator. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I assume it is some sort of spouting. He was pretty excited how it was turning out as he and my brother were fabricating it. I asked him to let me know when it was finished so I could take some pictures for the scrapbook we have in the office. It was a good thing I noticed it setting on the trailer as I was leaving for lunch or we never would have had any pictures! It was hard to capture the complexity of the piece. The angles were difficult for them. Now I wish I would have taken some before and during fab shots to help. They had parts hoisted up with chains and on saw horses as they welded them all together.
