Coats and Car Seats

Since becoming a parent, car seats have been an important issue for me. I researched car seats before Tate was born and I went against the norm by choosing to put the boys in a convertible car seat as newborns. First, I feel that infant carriers are wasteful. Babies use them for such a short period of time. At age 3 and 35ish pounds, Tate is still in the same car seat. Second, I couldn't find any convincing evidence that infant seats were more safe than a convertible car seat, as long as the babies are fit properly.
I chose to put my boys in Britax car seats because I liked their attention safety. I also liked how long we could use it. I kept Tate rear-facing until he was 2 years old. A lot of people made fun of me or criticized my decision, including my husband. I probably would have gone longer than his second birthday, but I finally gave in to Michael's insistence that Tate would be fine.
I have always heard that kids shouldn't wear coats in their car seats. It never really made sense to me. I mean if they are strapped in tight, how could it be dangerous? (If it seems obvious to you, keep in mind my natural hair color is blonde.) I was scrolling through my blog list and saw Megan from Newly Wed, Newly Bred! posted about a car seat poncho, which I thought sounded interesting. She also posted the following video, which provided me with an "a-ha!" moment. (Pretty sure my hand hit my forehead too!)

Now that my blonde moment is over, my boys will not be wearing coats in their car seats this winter. Mayer has a good supply of performance fleece pull-overs, thanks to hand-me-downs from my best friend's son. Tate has a lot of jackets, but only one is fleece. I don't worry about him as much because he doesn't seem to get as cold. He's fairly hot-blooded, like Michael. He can also tell me when he needs more layers, but I will be looking to get him one more because nothing is more important than my children. I am going to do anything I can to keep them safe.
