I was researching capes (more on that later!) when I decided to make a lace t-shirt. I saw a tutorial that made it look super easy and the result was super cute. It turns out that the lace I was using made it not-so-easy. I should have known based on the hem, which I had the good sense to use on both of my projects!
Materials I used:
fitted t-shirt (my pattern), lace tablecloth and bias tape
I was going to use the clear elastic pictured to reinforce the shoulders; however, I had so much trouble sewing the lace, I quickly abandoned the extra headache idea.
You can't see my hem very well, but I used a narrow satin stitch. I also discovered it helped to go back over/ next to that hem with a slightly wider stitch. It seemed to make it more stable and will hopefully keep it from unraveling as much.
I knew I had to put something around the raw edges because it was coming apart every time I touched it. I had some single fold bias tape. To make it easier to attach, I folded it in half and ironed it. I hate to iron, but it really made a HUGE difference! Then I used the same narrow satin stitch to attach the bias tape to the sleeves and neckline. I also think it gives a more finished look.
The results: The inspiration for my second project came from 2 places. I saw a pair of shorts Ashely Monroe was wearing on the Pistol Annies' facebook page and I thought they were awesome! I just couldn't figure out a way to make my own pair. I was looking for something else when I came across this post and instantly I knew how to make my own lace shorts!
Inspiration:
My supplies:
shorts (pattern...also look for them in part 2), a pair of white boxer briefs and a tablecloth
My version:
I wanted the lace loose over the boxers, so I used a pair of jean shorts as my larger pattern. (By the way, it doesn't look like it in either picture, but the legs are the same length.)
Summer's almost over and they sort of look like pajamas, but I love 'em! (Maybe they just feel like pajamas because I used to wear the boxers to sleep in.)
These 2 projects only cost me $1... the price of the tablecloth!! My mom buys sewing supplies at garage sales and they always seem to come with bias tape. She has amassed a ginormous collection in every color of the rainbow. The boxer briefs were hand-me-downs from Michael. I was also able to make them in one afternoon.
