We have travelled with cloth before and we have never had any real problems with it. In July, we stayed at the lake, in a camper for 4 1/2 days. I have a few packages of g inserts left, so I could have taken them to make life a little easier. But honestly, it wasn't that difficult without them.
First, I should mention where we were vacationing isn't your typical vacation. It may be a little more difficult when you are out doing a lot of site-seeing. We went to the family cabin in the Wahatoya Canyon. It is located between the Spanish Peaks in the San Isabel National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo Mountian Range. The nearest town is La Veta, Colorado, which we have to go through in order to get to the cabin.
Second, I should tell you that when I say cabin, I mean a true log cabin. I have been to some people's version of a "cabin" and it is more of a house. Our cabin was built around 1931, after my great grandpa purchased some land from the government. There have been some modern "convenience" updates, such as running water, the addition of an electric stove/ oven versus the original wood burning cook stove. (I suppose if we still had to use the outhouse across the road from the cabin, I probably would have used those g inserts!)
There is no telephone and for years wasn't even a TV. Several years ago, some thought they were being kind by donating one with a DVD player, but mostly is just sets and collects dust. We are there to enjoy life without it. OK, I would be lying if I didn't tell you that yes, we trekked to the top of the hill to Lover's Leap where our cell phones and Blackberries get signal. We had to keep our Facebook and Twitter status' current! Most of our time is spent hiking, relaxing on the deck, playing games or cards and definitely snacking.
Before heading into the canyon, we have to stop is Charlie's Cash and Carry, in La Veta, to have ice cream from the soda fountain. Uncharacteristically, I left my camera in the truck. Thankfully, my cousin Morgan was there to bail me out! He has a little trouble with milk tolerance, so he didn't get to eat a lot of ice cream.
I forgot to take a picture of the diaper suitcase. It was full! For the trip out, I wanted my 3 most absorbent diapers, in the diaper bag: Bamboo Bums, GroBaby and bumGenius AIO (all-in-one). I knew we were going to try not to stop a whole lot. Luckily, I packed a few extras because I ended up needing 1 more. I changed him every time we stopped and we ended up stopping a few more times than planned. Then I was sad that I packed all my most absorbent diapers for the trip out, oh well.
The next day, we took him on his first hike! We went to the meadows. He started out with mommy, but ended up with daddy. I wasn't too impressed with the carrier we got. It wasn't the one I really want, an Ergo, but there isn't any place close to us that sells them. Daddy hates to shop on-line and I prefer to see the item first at least once before purchasing. I did find that I liked the carrier better wearing him on my front. Tate seemed to prefer it too because he could see where we were going.
He fell asleep on the way up. It started raining when we got to the meadows, so we scrambled to get him covered up!
Tate got antsy on the way down and wanted to trying hiking himself. Mommy didn't plan very well for the hike. I packed lunch because we picnicked in the meadows, but I didn't pack any diapers. Oops! Wouldn't ya know it, guess who pooped?! Maybe subconsciously I didn't want to mix dirty diapers and food. Or quite possibly because I assumed that since he had already had 1 dirty diaper before we went, it would be okay. Leave it to my son to prove me wrong and to remind me what my dad said about assuming- it makes an ASS of U and ME.
