Through Thick and Thin

The other day on Facebook a company was doing a giveaway and the entry question was to list 3 things you love about your best friend. I didn't even know where to begin and where to end! Jenny and I met in 7th grade through mutual friends. I don't remember when we became best friends, but we really hit it off during 8th grade. We specifically bonded a lot during basketball season. We both love the sport and decided to go out for the team.
Neither of us was particularly good, but what really brought us together was running. We were the slow-pokes on the team. The team would have to run extra laps because Jen and I were so much slower than everyone else aka we weren't hustling. There were two things that were pure torture: suicides and running the stairs. Our middle school was 4 stories and as part of our conditioning, the coach would have us run up and down all 4 flights of stairs. I still have dreams of those stairways. We also had our first class together in 8th grade, technology. I will just say it was a very memorable class! I think we had at least one class together every year until we were sophomores in college.
We have had cycles in our relationship where we didn't talk much. During one particular instance, I almost threw our friendship away. Fifteen years ago today, I got mad at Jenny for a stupid reason and just stopped talking to her. For six weeks, I did not speak a single word to her. I did not respond to her notes, nothing. This wasn't easy because we sat next to each other in one class and we shared another best friend.
Although I don't remember the exact day we started talking again (Jen does), I do know that it was right before our senior prom. I'm so glad I got over my pettiness and decided to be friends again! We have been through so much since then. Some were really hard times; including miscarriages, a stillbirth and a cancer scare. But most have been good times. Thank you for everything Jenny! Here's to many more years of friendship. I love you!
